Broadband Internet

Broadband Internet access has given the world better and faster options to connect to the Internet. Compared to the archaic dial-up Internet access, broadband Internet provides faster download and upload times, and has given online gamers more opportunities to enjoy gaming.

What is Broadband Internet?

Broadband is commonly referred to as high-speed Internet because of its high rate of data transmission. The term “broadband” has many different interpretations, however. The FCC, the International Telecommunication Union Standardization Sector, and the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development all have different requirements when it comes to broadband Internet. The International Telecommunication Union Standardization Sector only allows Internet that offers data transmission speeds of 1.5 to 2 mbps to be classified as broadband Internet. The FCC requires 0.2 mbps in one direction for asymmetric connections. For advanced connections, the FCC requires that the Internet connection provide at least 200 kbps for both downstreaming and upstreaming in order to be considered broadband Internet. Finally, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development’s qualifications for broadband Internet access are 256 kbps in one direction. In general, any Internet connection of 256 kbps or more is considered broadband Internet.

Unlike dial-up modems that are generally only capable of a maximum bitrate of 56 kbps and require the full use of a telephone line, broadband technology supplies at least double the speed and does not disrupt telephone use. This is why broadband Internet is a much more popular choice amongst Internet users.
